Court refuses bail for man at centre of alleged soccer match-fixing ring (ABC) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

The man alleged to be the Australian ringleader of an international match-fixing syndicate has been refused bail.

Gerry Gsubramanian, 45, is charged with fixing five Victorian Premier League soccer matches involving the Southern Stars Football Club.

Police were opposing Gsubramanian’s bail application on the grounds he was a flight risk and might interfere with witnesses.

But it turned out his application failed because his legal team did not find suitable accommodation.

Police say they investigated one of the addresses proposed and found the accommodation was being arranged by a Malaysian man they believe is a member of the match-fixing syndicate.

Magistrate Jelena Popovic said Gsubramanian could reapply for bail when appropriate accommodation was found.

She was critical of the prosecution case against him describing it as vague.

Subramanian returns to court in December along with four players and the coach of the Southern Stars.
