Immigration Minister Scott Morrison is expected to reveal on Monday how the coalition government will publicise asylum seeker arrivals.
But cabinet minister Greg Hunt says the Abbott government will offer “regular, continuous, full disclosure”.
Under the previous Labor government, Customs and Border Protections told journalists every time a boat was intercepted in Australian waters.
That practice appears to have changed under the coalition government, with Customs now directing media inquiries to Mr Morrison’s office.
The minister will outline on Monday how the coalition will keep people informed about its border protection approach, Operation Sovereign Borders.
It’s expected he will give media weekly briefings with Deputy Chief-of-Army Angus Campbell, who is leading the operation.
Mr Hunt says the coalition is “deadly serious” about controlling Australia’s borders and saving lives at sea.
“We are focused on protecting the borders but also providing disclosure but we will do it in a manner consistent with a military operation,” he told Sky News on Sunday.
“There will be regular, continuous, full disclosure.”
