Qld motorists want higher speed limits (AAP) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

The Queensland government is not ruling out increasing the maximum speed limit of 110km/h on highways.

Transport Minister Scott Emerson says it is possible that speed limits will be lifted above 110km/h, however it will be up to the experts to decide.

“It will come down to the safety engineers determining what is appropriate in terms of speed,” Mr Emerson told reporters in Brisbane.

Mr Emerson said the RACQ had initially suggested that speed limits could go up to 120km/h on parts of the Pacific Highway.

However, that recommendation had not been included in the motoring group’s submission to the state’s biggest review of speed limits in almost 20 years, he said.

The government will select 100 roads, based on public feedback, and ask safety engineers to examine any possible speed limit changes.

The speed limit review has attracted more than 3300 submissions, with many suggesting speed limit changes on the state’s major arteries, including the Bruce Highway and Pacific Motorway.

Extending the 100km/h zone on the Bruce Highway south to the Pine River and increasing the speed limit on the Pacific Motorway are among changes which have been suggested.

People also would like to see the speed limit changed on the Warrego Highway.

About 52 per cent of the submissions identified speed limits being too low and 32 per cent being to high.

Mr Emerson many motorists wanted consistent speed limits.

He said the state government would determine the 100 roads for speed limit review in the next two months.

No changes to speed limits would be made until next year, he said.

Improving line markings and speed limit signage will also be examined as part of the review.
