The counting of postal votes continues today in the seat of on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, where businessman Clive Palmer is ahead by just three votes.

At one stage Mr Palmer fell 18 votes behind Liberal National Party (LNP) candidate Ted O’Brien.

But by 1:30pm (AEST) Wednesday those gains had again reversed and Mr Palmer led by just three votes.

The votes are effectively split between the two candidates and there is just one polling place left to be counted, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) says.

The deadline for postal votes is 6:00pm Friday, but a recount is expected.

Mr Palmer has already said he wants a recount regardless of the outcome.

The mining executive, who is also leader of the Palmer United Party, has been outspoken about “irregularities” in the electoral system.
