Police officer shot in face during Gold Coast robbery (ABC) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

A Queensland Police officer has been shot in the face during a robbery on the Gold Coast.

A senior member of the police dog squad, aged in his 40s, was shot while responding to an armed hold-up at Arundel Tavern at around 1.30am.

Emergency services say the policeman was shot in the face, with the bullet passing through his cheek and jawbone before exiting through his ear.

He was taken to Southport Hospital in a serious condition.

Two suspected robbers were also shot.

A 23-year-old was shot in the foot and a 47-year-old man in the leg.

Both suspects have been taken to hospital under police guard.

Chief Superintendent Steve Hollands says anyone with information about the incident should come forward.

“Obviously if anyone’s seen anything that would be very helpful, we do have a mobile police facility set up at the moment at Napper Road out there at Ernest,” he said.

“We have a number of police officers out there so if anyone has seen or heard anything, by all means approach a police officer and we’ll get that information from you.”

The shooting not only happened on Police Remembrance Day, but also on the same day two people are to be sentenced for the murder of Detective Constable Damian Leeding in 2011.

Constable Leeding was shot also shot in the face during a hold-up at a Gold Coast tavern.
